Temporary lighting in place on first levelThe first level at sections D and C are experiencing most of the activity. Construction is underway for partition framing, plumbing, ductwork, electrical work and exterior drywall. A large air handling unit has been located on the first floor. Temporary lighting is in place. Three crawlspace access openings were closed yesterday. Five more will be sealed with rebar and concrete tomorrow.

Workers building forms for concrete pads, section A roofThe upper levels are being cleaned from the concrete construction and pouring. Workmen chip away concrete overflows and remove forms. The forming process uses a considerable amount of lumber and reusable metal forms. For the last week and a half, two 30 cubic yard dumpsters per day have been filled with scrap lumber. The pan decks and other reusable hardware are stacked and transported off the job site.

Air handlers at fifth level penthouse
Four large air handlers have been installed within the perimeter of the future penthouse. A concrete pad is ready for a fifth. Two additional concrete pads are being constructed on the roof in section A for additional air handlers.

Dee Brown Inc, the masonry contractor, anticipates the start of the exterior wall next Monday. Exterior drywall is being installed at the first level. The drywall will be covered with a trowel-on "damp-proofing" material by a sub-contractor, Southwest Construction. Roofline at section D, east sideBrick ledges and 3/8 inch galvanized shelf angle will support burnished CMU (concrete masonry unit) blocks at specified intervals. Before the CMU blocks are set on the ledges and shelf angles, a special self adhesive polyguard flashing is installed. In addition "DW10" wall ties will be used, usually, on every other course of brick. A "type N" mortar will be used in conjunction with 3/8 inch wide "Quadra vents," a special weep tube that uses many small holes that let moisture out but prevent insects from entering. Several truck loads of CMUs have been delivered in preparation. Three sizes of exterior burnished CMU blocks will be used:

  • 16 x 4 x 24
  • 12 x 4 x 24
  • 8 x 4 x 24
