Dr. Rufus Green, Distinguished Alumni 2000
As the first physician to graduate from the Executive MBA program, Dr. Green helped define the role that the SOM could play in the careers of doctors. His work for UTD led to the creation of the Alliance for Medical Management Education (AMME) program offered in alliance with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. After the AMME program was established, Dr. Green continued to serve on its advisory council.
The EMBA program appealed to him because of the evolution in health care from the traditional fee-for-service care to today's system of managed care. Dr. Green saw that as the healthcare industry became more competitive, he increasingly needed business skills to complement his medical expertise.
"Twenty-first century medicine is creating an exciting new role for doctors ... that of the physician-manager," Dr. Green explains.
Although his service as president and medical director for the Urology Network of Texas and the Urology Institute in Dallas require commitments of large amounts of his time, Dr. Green is an active SOM alumnus. Former EMBA classmate John Fowler notes members of the class stay in touch through their investment club. Mr. Fowler describes Dr. Green as a brilliant man with a good sense of humor and a realistic view of the world.
