Application for GraduationIf you're planning to graduate in Spring 2004, the application deadline is January 15. Graduation application fee is $40. There will be $100 late fee charge if the application is received after the deadline. Commencement for Spring 2004 is May 8. Online students are encouraged to attend. Please email the GMBA Advisor at gmbaadvising@utdallas.edu if you are graduating. Please also see the Graduation Web Site for more information.
UTD Comet CardThe UTD official student ID card - UTD Comet Card can also be issued to online students upon request. Here is the information and procedure for requesting a Comet Card:
Online Teaching Award NominationEach year the School of Management honors faculty members who did an outstanding job in teaching. Starting with the 2001-2002 academic year, a teaching award was added to recognize the effectiveness of teaching in the Global MBA Online Program. Congratulations to 2003 award winner Dr. Marilyn Kaplan (BPS 6201). The teaching award nomination is based primarily on student nominations of one outstanding instructor for an online course (or courses) taught in Fall and Spring semesters each academic year. If you've taken online courses in Fall 2003 semester, please take the opportunity to submit your Online Teaching Award Nomination.
Spring 2004 Course Info and Summer 2004 PreviewThe Spring 2004 semester is scheduled for 1/12 - 5/3 with the 1st 8 week courses running from 1/12 - 3/5 and the 2nd 8 week courses running from 3/16 - 5/3. Thirteen online courses will be offered. One of them is newly developed. See information about this new course below. In Summer 2004, 8 courses are currently planned.
If you still haven't registered for the Spring 2004 online courses, please send your registration request to gmbaadvising@utdallas.edu. Some courses are filling up quickly and may have reached the limit of enrollment numbers. Also the registration payment deadline is Jan. 8. Please make sure you pay by the deadline if you want to keep your course enrollment status. Please check the GMBA Course Offering Page for more course information. The Getting Started Information Page for Registered Online Students contains additional links and useful information to help you get started with the online courses. A Reminder: please make sure you have a valid UTD Net account and update your account password if necessary so that you can access UTD WebCT courses when the Spring 04 semester starts. New Online Course - BPS 6370.0G1 EntrepreneurshipThis course provides an introduction to entrepreneurship, with an emphasis on identifying and evaluating opportunities, and developing and financing new ventures. Topics addressed include opportunity identification and evaluation, startup strategies, business valuation, business plan development, attracting stakeholders and financing the venture, managing the growing business and exit strategies. Case studies and guest lectures by entrepreneurs and venture capital partners provide a real-world perspective. The major deliverable of this course is an early stage feasibility analysis of a venture of the student's choosing. Prerequisites: AIM 6305, FIN 6301, OB 6301; BPS 6210, or permission of the instructor. About the Instructor Dr. Picken's business and consulting career spans more than 30 years. He has held senior leadership positions in several NASDAQ companies and has served as a senior financial and marketing executive in major operating units of Fortune 500 corporations. He has played a leadership role in two IPOs and several successful turnarounds. His industry experience includes electronics and heavy equipment manufacturing, transportation, aviation services, equipment leasing, computer hardware/software and government contracting. Dr. Picken holds an AB in Economics from Dartmouth College, an MBA in Finance and Accounting from the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth, and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Dr. Joseph C. Picken is a member of the faculty of the School of Management at the University of Texas at Dallas, where he teaches graduate courses in Strategic Management, Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Organizational Behavior in the MBA, EMBA and Executive Education programs. From 1995-2000, Dr. Picken taught undergraduate, graduate and executive education courses at the Edwin L. Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas at Arlington.
