HMGT 6320 The American Healthcare System Explores the structure and political economy of the US health system. Topics include the economics of cost, quality and access to healthcare, the impact of regulation on health care delivery and analysis of recent proposals for health care reform. This course serves as an introduction for healthcare majors. |
HMGT 6321 Strategic Management of Healthcare Organizations Explores how healthcare organizations can create sustainable competitive advantage in a volatile, reimbursement driven industry. Topics include external and internal environmental analysis; strategy formulation; organizational design and control; and the impact of mergers and alliances on industry performance. |
HMGT 6322 Healthcare Cost Management and Control Examines how healthcare organizations allocate and report costs and use that information for managerial decision-making. Additional topics include how activity based costing can be used to more accurately determine the true cost of medical services and the use of the balanced scorecard to manage the conflicting imperatives of controlling costs and improving care. |
HMGT 6323 Healthcare Informatics Examines the unique challenges of clinical and service process improvement in the healthcare industry, including the role of data management and information technology in improving healthcare delivery. |
HMGT 6324 Healthcare Negotiation and Dispute Resolution Examines and analyzes the significant issues related to negotiation, change management and conflict management in the healthcare industry. Exercises and simulations reinforce theories about the role of negotiations in effective management and enable students to develop their negotiation skills. |
HMGT 6325 Healthcare Supply Chain Management Explores how effectively managing and continuously improving the end-to-end health care supply chain provides a competitive advantage. Topics include supply chain fundamentals; key players in the health care supply chain and their challenges; how the health care supply chain works; impact of technology on supply chain performance; and lean six sigma methodology. |
HMGT 6326 / POEC 7329 Biomedical Frontiers in Healthcare Explores how the commercialization of next-generation biomedical advances is transforming the healthcare industry. Topics include the expanding categories of biomedical therapeutics, the financing and launching of biomedical ventures and the business models that make biomedical ventures possible. The class is jointly taught by both UTD faculty and several distinguished biomedical entrepreneurs. |
HMGT 6227 (MAS 6V01) Information and Knowledge Management in Healthcare (2 credit hrs.) Explores how effective information and knowledge management can leverage the intellectual capital in healthcare organizations and help them achieve technical superiority. It covers the key areas of knowledge management, from identifying knowledge in an organization to promoting and facilitating knowledge sharing and innovation. Using numerous case studies, the course surveys the technology, the strategies and the practice of knowledge management. |
HMGT 6229 (MAS 6V01) Seminar in Healthcare Management Examines several important structural, political and regulatory issues in healthcare. Topics include healthcare reform; consumer directed healthcare; the future of Medicare and Medicaid; health plan economics; measuring quality in healthcare; and comparative healthcare systems. |
